What to expect after thread lifting treatment:
After threading, it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, pulling pain and rippling of skin. The severity of these experiences vary depending on your general skin condition, the laxity of your skin, the number of threads placed, the amount of skin lifting desired and your individual response to the threads and the procedure. For heavier, thicker, loose, sun damaged or more mature skin, the recovery period is longer and there is more rippling initially. These patients may want an additional treatment for additional results.
Tight feeling, stinging or pulling discomfort will subside over a 2-3week period. Some mild rippling of the skin is common and expected. In addition, the tighter the pull, the greater the lifting effect and the better the final result, but there is also more of the initial skin changes and it takes longer to fully settle. To provide the best results, Dr Robert Lau prefers to “hyper lift” the threads (lift beyond the expected results). Immediate hyper lifted results should be evident, and it is expected that after two weeks, this will settle to a more natural lift. This is normal. Slight dimpling is also common, this will either settle naturally, or Dr Rob may manipulate it gently at your 1 week review to easily correct this.
Swelling is often uneven after the procedure, due to how medicines work and individual differences. This will settle by itself in 2 weeks.
Occasionally, slight thread movement may occur, which can occur at any time up to 2 months. This can result in a clicking or tugging sensation, and sudden mild discomfort. This is simply the threads settling into the most appropriate position, and will settle in a matter of days. The strong and premium threads we use is very unlikely to prematurely break.
During the recovery period:
- Use your healing nutrient face mask every night from the next day onwards. This will improve wound healing, speed up your recovery, reduce discomfort and reduce swelling.
- Do not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours.
- Do not engage in vigorous physical activities for 2 weeks, especially weight training. However light walking is encouraged to promote healing.
- Do not drink alcohol for one week.
- Keep your head elevated by 30 degrees and sleep on your back for the first three nights.
- Washing your face is fine but only gently initially, and always with the direction of the lift and not against it (wash up and back, not down and forward).
- Do not massage, have facial treatments, or use active skin products for 2 weeks unless as directed.
- Apply SPF 50+ and avoid excessive sun exposure in order to optimise the wound healing.
For 2 weeks:
- Do not open your mouth too wide as it places excessive stress on your skin. (e.g. excessive yawning, smiling, sneezing and other large facial movements)
- Do not have dental treatment
- Avoid hard foods that require significant chewing (vegetable sticks, jerkies, steaks etc.)
- Do not touch or soak your wound site. No bathing, swimming and sauna.
