Fat dissolving injections are medicines and are often composed of a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance produced by our liver. Its role in the body is exactly what we are achieving with the treatment, to dissolve fat.

Fat dissolving injections work by breaking down the membrane of fat cells, which then get absorbed by the body and progressively eliminated by the kidneys. It is hard for fat cells to be replaced, so the number of fat cells decrease permanently. It is particularly useful for the removal of localised pockets of fat. Yes, the brand that we use for fat dissolving injections is a TGA approved injectable treatment for dissolving the fat cells under the chin. However, it can be safely used to eliminate fat cells in other areas of the body, as long as the medicine is injected properly at the right dosage in a sterile environment and administered by the qualified injectors at The Lime Tree Clinic.

Side effects associated with fat dissolving injections are temporary and include swelling, tenderness, bruising and numbness. These resolve in 1-3 weeks and are expected. Our qualified cosmetic injector will discuss the benefits and risks with you before your treatment is administered.

Fat dissolving injections are popularly used to destroy the fat cells under the chin that cause a facial condition known as “submental fullness” or commonly described as a double chin. Other common treatment areas include but are not limited to:

Fat dissolving injections are non-surgical, quick and have relatively little down time. Depending on the location and the number of areas to be treated, the whole process generally takes about 30 minutes.

Prior to the procedure, our cosmetic practitioner will assess your medical history and the target treatment area to ensure you are deemed suitable for the fat dissolving injections. The areas for injection will be thoroughly cleansed and marked to enable precise delivery of the fat dissolving injections. A series of injections are then made into the target area. The treatment area may become warm and red, and you may also experience a tingling sensation. A numbing cream can be applied 20 minutes prior to the procedure to minimise any discomfort during the procedure.

The procedure ends with a soft massage to the injected area for about 5 minutes to enhance the distribution of the solution.

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience swelling, bruising, itching, pain, sensitivity to pressure and warmth at the injection site. Avoid scratching or picking around the injection site and keep the area dry for at least 4 hours. This is normal and generally disappears within 1-2 weeks. You can continue your usual daily activities immediately.

Do not drink alcohol or perform strenuous exercise as this may result in additional bruising. Avoid exposure to intense heat, which can affect the treated areas.

Depending on the individual and the areas treated, visible results can be seen from 4 to 6 weeks after treatment. Depending on the size of the area and the fat thickness, you may need 1 to 4 or more treatments to achieve the desired results. By maintaining a healthy diet and a stable weight, the treatment results are long term.
