Teeth grinding, also medically known as bruxism, is a common problem that can happen during the daytime and often while sleeping. Sufferers are often unaware of their constant teeth grinding during sleep until they develop complications, such as waking up tired with an aching jaw or headache, poor sleep or poor daytime concentration and when noted by their dentist to be wearing down their teeth.
Constant teeth grinding not only affects your physical and mental health but can also be a cosmetic concern. When you constantly grind or clench your teeth, the masseter muscle in the jaw area will enlarge, making your jaws appear wide and your face square. A wide jaw is usually not desired, especially in females.
The cause of teeth grinding can be linked with stress or anxiety and possibly as a response to certain medicines and caffeine containing drinks, such as coffee and tea.
